Man Suang Movie Review: A mystery from ancient Thailand

Thailand during the reign of King Rama III flourished immensely in terms of internal growth and international relations. The people sought opportunities beyond their homeland and achieved vast success. To those who interest themselves in history, would find their curiosity satisfied with the movie Man Suang. Now, there are quite a few Thai dramas aka lakorns out there which depict the ancient times of the land.

With Man Suang one gets to revisit the times and also delve into a crisp thriller featuring some of the most prominent actors of the current times. The movie stars actors Mile and Apo in the lead. Mile and Apo found global fame after the success of the BL show KinnPorsche where they played leads. Not only them, but the entire cast found fame at home and overseas. With Man Suang we see actors Mile and Apo reunite on screen, albeit in new avatars.

Man Suang tells the story of Khem (played by Apo), a skilled dancer. He and his friend Wan get caught in murder scandal. They are offered a job at Man Suang. After seeing Khem’s skills, he is appointed as the main male dancer. At the academy, he meets Chatra (played by Mile) a drummer. As the two get to know each other, their friendship grows. Chatra is the son of Thai-Chinese parents. The reputation of such mixed race children is not so well in the then society for the Chinese and other foreigners were notorious in usurping opportunities from local Thai folks.

Khem and Wan are tasked to finding the real killer, but as they delve deeper into the mystery, they find a bigger game at play. They team up with Hong, the master of Man Suang house to find the main culprits. Khem, Chatra and Master Hong team up and execute a stellar plan to right the wrongs.

In Man Suang, we get to see Thailand just after the colonisation was eradicated from the country. The vibrant color palette in each screen brings the actions to life on screen. Each member of the star cast delivered a brilliant performance. Apo looked ever so graceful in his dance performances. Mile’s mysterious yet approachable persona as a percussionist was a delight to see on screen.

Man Suang gives a snapshot of issues that were prevalent in the Thai society back then. Dancers and artists were not treated with respect by the society. While they were in demand for their art, they were abused and tortured by the society. The movie artfully highlights issues the artisans of that era faced.

Man Suang is a movie to watch if you are looking for a delightful mix of mystery, history and thrill. The movie is currently available on Netflix globally. JAL gives Man Suang a shining 4 out of 5 stars. Have you watched the movie yet? Tell us what you think, in the comments below!

Unlucky Like Us by Krista and Becca Ritchie – Unlucky Like Us Review – The second book of Lunnelly and pre-final book to the Like Us series continues the saga of our beloved human and his space babe. The previous book ends on the roof of hale house as Donnelly leaves after making a promise to Loren Hale. If you thought that ending was not fair , this book is going to break your Lunnelly heart .

In this book, Donnelly tries to protect Luna from his family by pretending to hate on famous families and get in good terms with his father. Luna and Donnelly believe they are two unlucky people in love. Luna is Donnelly’s light and reason of existence. Who knew the hot bodyguard of SFO who is a die-hard fan of Cobalts will fall for the Hales. Right, without further ado, let’s get into the review in detail.

Unlucky Like Us by Krista and Becca Ritchie – Unlucky Like Us Review – Unlucky Like Us Summary

I was way too excited to read this book. I just completed rereading the Like Us series. Well, if you read the Addicted/Calloway series , you already know and love the core six. But if your starting off with the Like Us series , and Luna and Donnelly are your first couple in the series, you would probably not understand the dynamics and relationships of these families on a deeper and personal level. You will probably not like a few characters and believe there is not a single character on this series that you wont fall in love with.

Lily and Lo are always Lily and Lo. Their love can be written for more books than what we already have. Connor and Lo are the same as ever. Ryke and Rose were missed dearly in this book. I would have loved to read Luna’s dynamics with her aunts and uncles .Luna’s friends Eliot and Tom are the kind of friends you would want after a bad day.

To talk of the Hale Children, we know Moffy is the protective big-brother we have been reading for over 11 books now. Xander Hale, the little brother has my heart. Readers who begin with this book might not understand him but if you have been reading from the first book, you understand what I am saying. There was a scene where I shed tears for him. Kinney Hale, the littlest and the most fiercest Hale has always got her sister’s back.

For everyone who’s been dealt the worst cards by life , there’s always someone or something to look forward to at the end of the day . Every girl who was told she was weird or different, there’s someone who makes us believe we are just beyond the understanding of earthlings. Every alternate universe you get the happy ending.

City Hunter Movie Review: A whip and crack adaptation

City Hunter is one of the most popular mangas from the 80s. The manga has seen adaptation across anime and live-action ventures. City Hunter follows Ryo Saeba aka City Hunter, a proficient detective but a sleazy man. He goes around Japan solving crimes and helping the police department. His expertise as an assassin also brings along his pervert ways. The manga has spawned into several anime and live action adaptations. Come 2024, we have a new live-action Japanese film based on the characters which have been loved and also critiqued over the years.

City Hunter Movie Review: A whip and crack adaptation - Just A Library
City Hunter Movie Review: A whip and crack adaptation

The 2024 version of City Hunter stars Ryohei Suzuki in the titular lead Ryo Saeba aka City Hunter. He is joined by Misato Morita as Kaori Makimura. The movie follows Ryo and Kaori as they avenge Hideyuki. Hideyuki was Ryo’s loyal friend and colleague as well as Kaori’s brother. His death was a murder. He was killed by a hidden but powerful organization after Ryo and him got closer to uncovering a secret and illegal project of creating superhumans. The movie premiered on Netflix on April 25, 2024.

The movie is just under two hours and packs quite an entertainment factor, if one can let go of the perverted scenes that is. In the original work, Ryo Saeba is a Grade A sleazeball and pervert. He does not take up any case if there are no appealing women involved. The original and a few adaptations featured quite a few explicit scenes which would not sit well audience of today. It was wrong even then, but a mature dialogue around these things was absent.

Watch the trailer of City Hunter here:

The Netflix adaptation sticks to the original character where Ryo Saeba is a playboy who is unabashed about his attraction towards physically attractive women. There was a forward change in the character with no off-handed comments on any sexuality, gender, identity. But even then the objectification of women was ever so present. The movie also displays the night markets of modern day Tokyo where women are still marketed as sexual objects to fulfil men’s fantasies. It is a sad truth we all have to live with.

City Hunter’s cartoon-like dialogue delivery and behaviour add a comic angle to the character. One cannot comment much on the character growth or arc here. The characters are pretty straight forward, with more or less predictable tendencies. Perhaps it was the physical lack of an antagonist. We know that Ryo is against an organization with its roots in Central America, but there was not one challenging character to manipulate Ryo’s techniques.

All we saw was a few low-ranking men and a hoard of soldiers attempting to thwart Ryo and Kaori’s attempts. The only saving grace was the lady who had initially approached Ryo under a fake identity to find a young girl named Kurumi. The fight between her and Ryo was the closest we came to Ryo actually fighting off an antagonist.

It is a decently pace piece for a movie which serves as an introduction film. The slow-motion scenes are well timed and add to the viewers’ engagement in the scene. It is always a challenge to translate from pen to stylus but the makers of City Hunter have done a good job when it comes to catching the nuances of the original and embedding it in the latest settings.

If one can manage to it through the tantalizing shots of exposed flesh, then City Hunter is not so bad to invest time in. It chalks up to a decent comedy action film with enough intrigue to keep the audience engaged. It sits in line with those cult classic films featuring a mystery engaging enough to get the thinking wheels turning.

Will there be a sequel for City Hunter?

At the time of this writing, there has been no official news from Netflix about a sequel for City Hunter. Considering the movie’s rising popularity, Netflix might give a green signal for the next story. The movie concluded with an open ending where we see that Ryo and Kaori manage to save Kurumi and find the truth behind Hideyuki’s murder. But we do not know who is the brains behind the organization running these illegal scientific experiments on humans. This movie serves as a good premise for a broader story, if there ever was to be one. One can sure hope there will be a sequel for City Hunter, perhaps with less sleaziness and more comedy.

JAL gives City Hunter 6 out of 10 stars. What are your thoughts on City Hunter? Tell us in the comments below!

Dead Boy Detectives Review: An engaging tale of supernatural investigation

Dead Boy Detectives Series Review: An engaging tale of supernatural investigation

Neil Gaiman’s stories have always given a voice to the minority, spoken to niche and appealed audience of all age ranges. His works are something that speak about the seemingly ordinary but in a fashion that is anything but ordinary. It is only when one carefully reads the stories does one realise the main essence of a story.

Neil Gaiman’s work has been adapted to television and it has founds its dedicated group of audience who swear by these adaptations. One of those works is Good Omens starring Michael Sheen and David Tennent. This supernatural fantasy series follows an angel Aziraphale and a demon Crowley as they navigate living in the human world also manage their supernatural status. Two seasons have aired so far and everyone is waiting for even the slightest hint of the third season.

Dead Boy Detectives Review: An engaging tale of supernatural investigation - Just A Library
Dead Boy Detectives Review: An engaging tale of supernatural investigation

The latest work of Gaiman to find its space on screen is Netflix’s Dead Boy Detectives. This eight-episode show premiered on April 25, 2024. This show follows Edwin and Charles, two dead boys who investigate supernatural events and help the dead. George Rexstrew stars as Edwin Paine and Jayden Revri stars as Charles Rowland in this series. This duo has been fighting witches, demons and spirits after choosing to not enter the afterlife. Kassius Nelson joins them as Crystal Palace, a psych medium who can see ghosts but has a secret of her own. Then we have Yuyu Kitamura as Niko, an eccentric human girl who can also see ghosts after having a near death experience.

Watch the trailer for Dead Boy Detectives here:

For those who have read the comics, would find a familiarity in this on-screen adaptation. Edwin and Charles are contrasts to each other. First, the two come from different eras. Second, their personalities are quite different. While both harbour secrets of their own, they have found belonging and friendship in each other.

As the show progresses, we see that the challenges that Charles and Edwin face grow steadfastly serious and dangerous. As they solve the mystery behind each wandering supernatural being, they also unravel the secrets they have been carrying. Edwin comes in touch with his sexuality, Charles addresses his hidden trauma, Crystal and Niko uncover demons of their own.

What makes Neil Gaiman’s works special is that his work is not bound within limits. His characters are relatable but you would not usually find them in a person standing next to you. Instead, you would find that one inexplicable quirk embodied in a character. There is a renewed interest in things that have been around us but we do not pay attention to. Same goes for Dead Boy Detectives. Each supernatural spirit shows such a side to human emotions and actions that it makes them memorable.

The undercurrent of dark humour and absurdism is not amiss to the trained eye. Most of it comes from the supernatural beings, Death and other officials dealing with the afterlife. What makes it comical is the fact that humans have always been fascinated with the afterlife. Many a lores have been told imagining a world ephemeral and unreal. But Gaiman’s stories always add the ‘human touch’ to these ideas of heaven and hell. The clerical offices dealing with documents, officials running to meet their targets, bosses being bosses – these instances remove the fantastical vision that most humans have and replace it with a realistic one, with just a little touch of magic.

Coming to the visual aspect of Dead Boy Detectives, it is quite an indulgent watch. We have gory moments when the supernatural beings act the way they are. We also have a low tone pastel and gray color palette which runs consistent with the misty world of all things dead that Charles and Edwin ‘live’ in. The opening credits is an intriguing addition. One would usually expect some grimy and grisly for a show that is about the dead, but here we find a neon pop video of two skeletons. This short montage adds to the quirk and chaos that waits for the viewers afterwards.

Overall, Dead Boy Detectives is the show that you have to watch if you are looking for a good YA story without adulations. Most YA stories keep a heavy focus just one theme which becomes lacklustre after a while. But with Dead Boy Detectives, we see that the characters go on a journey of self-discovery without making it a cringe and cry fest. There is a mature take on things because Charles and Edwin have been around for far longer as ghosts than they have been alive on the human plane.

Will there be a sequel to Dead Boy Detectives?

At the time of this writing, there has been no official announcement from Netflix regarding a sequel for Dead Boy Detectives. It has been a few days since the show has premiered, if it continues to garner good numbers for the platform, Netflix might greenlight a sequel soon. After that stunning finale, there is definitely scope for another season of Dead Boy Detectives.

If there come any hiccup in the negotiations of SAG-AFTRA with production houses, there could be a considerable delay for a sequel, similar to what we see with Good Omens. Would you like to see season two of Dead Boy Detectives? Tell us in the comments! I, for one, would like to see Charles and Edwin back in action. Perhaps delve into their living past further, or see how they manage in the afterlife!

JAL gives 8.5 out of 10 to Dead Boy Detectives.

Love Reset Movie Review: A quirky tale of second chance romance

When one falls in love, one is blinded by the idea that everything is going to be sunshine and sparkles. One sometimes fails to realise that spending one’s life with someone is a big deal. There can be several new things to learn about one’s partner, to adjust, to compromise, to unlearn, to relearn. Simply put, falling in love is easy but staying in love is what take takes real efforts.

Movies and tv shows have often portrayed the rosy side and the reality of love. Sometimes there is a dash of humour to lighten the mood, sometimes there is a serious dialogue. South Korean film industry has produced several movies which outlines the ups and downs of love. One of the latest flicks to hit the block is Love Reset. What would happen if a warring couple forgets their dislikes for each other and begins dating anew?

Love Reset stars Kang Ha Neul and Jung So Min in the lead. Right from the start, the movie is a sarcastic take on love and marriage with the leads squabbling for a divorce after what felt like a fairytale romance. The movie was released in theatres in South Korea in 2023 and later it found its place on Viki, making it available in several regions across the globe.

    Love Reset Movie Review

Love Reset tells the story of Hong Na Ra and No Jeong Yeol, a couple on the verge of divorce. They got married despite their class difference and non-approval from their parents. They were so in love but after marriage, things changed drastically. They began fighting over trivial matters and had not one moment of peace.

One day, they visit the court house where they are given 30 days to sort their differences otherwise the divorce would be finalised. While returning from the court house, they get into an accident. Both lose their memories in the accident. They do not remember that they dated, got married or were on a verge of a divorce.

They begin to know each other anew. They begin to fall in love again. But their respective families see this as a chance to seperate them once and for all. As these two again try to get together and their families try to seperate them, a hilarity ensues.

Throughout the movie, the contrast between the leads and their families is a definite point of humour. There is violence but it does not look threatening. There is an underscore of pathetic behaviour from the characters as they do not actually say what is on their mind but only hint and hope that their minds will be heard.

Kang Ha Neul is no stranger to the slapstick comedy genre. We saw him deliver a fine performance alongside Park Seo Joon in Midnight Runners. The actor has time and again proven his mettle in acting with a choicest selection of roles. With Love Reset, he does the same.

Jung So Min has made a name for herself on the small screen with notable roles in dramas like Playful Kiss, Because This Is My First Life, etc. Her role in this movie brings out a new side to the actor’s versatility.

JAL gives Love Reset 8 out of 10 broken hearts. What do you think about Love Reset? Have you seen the movie yet? Tell us in the comments below!

Maamla Legal Hai Series Review: Witness the other side of the law

The law and order in any country is arduous process. It takes immense patience, time and even money if one wants to get justice. In a country like India where there are millions of people seeking justice for different reasons, one can only imagine the strain on the resources.

As a country, the modern India has come a long way but the rural and suburban India has a long way to go. The legal system in remote and smaller towns is quite wonky, much to everyone’s chagrin. One of Netflix India’s latest offerings – Maamla Legal Hai – taps into this eccentricity of the legal system in such small towns. This show features Ravi Kishan, ail Grewal, Nidhi Bisht and Anand Joshi in pivotal roles. Maamla Legal Hai was released on Netflix on March 1, 2024.

    Maamla Legal Hai Review

Maamla Legal Hai is a story about the lawyers, their lives, and legal cases in the Patparganj District Court. We are introduced to a big bunch of attorneys who clamour for even a smallest of remuneration from any client. The attorneys set up their benches and desks outside the court and hound at any prospective client coming with a case. The competition amongst lawyers is quite high and it is evident with the shocking reality where they struggle to earn a decent income, much less get their practise started.

This series captures the micro-politics and hierarchic segregation of power that goes on within smaller communities. A district court would invite cases of the strangest nature from the remotest of locations. Each episode of Maamla Legal Hai brings forth an eccentric case which can only be deemed as ‘strange’ and ‘highly unlikely’. But even then, it is comical to see the lawyers fight hard to get a case to their name fight for it.

In addition to showing an eccentric case, the show also presents the harsh realities a lawyer has to face each day. Despite having a good education and a degree to their name, the lawyers have to struggle a lot to set up their practise. Politics, power and favouritism often become barriers for one to go ahead. Those who are at the bottom of the food chain struggle to go up because of lack of support and chances from their seniors.

Amidst all joke and humour, there is also a slice of humanity in each story. We see that despite the selfish and borderline corrupt nature of certain lawyers, at the end of the day when their fellows needed their help, the lawyers came together to solve the issue.

Will there be Season 2 of Maamla Legal Hai?

At the time of writing this article, there has been no official news about a second season of Maamla Legal Hai. The first season did end on an open note, especially with VD Tyagi signing up to be a judge. The power control within Patparganj court would change immensely with VD Tyagi’s promotion.

If season 2 of Maamla Legal Hai is announced, then the viewers can hope to see VD Tyagi settling into his new role as a judge. Sujata Negi got her own chamber, VD Tyagi’s interns also got promoted and Ani also found her place in the court which was hesitant to accept her initially.

Maamla Legal Hai is a sweet attempt at showcasing the flaws and finesse of the Indian judicial system. It highlights the quirks of a district court which attracts cases from small towns and villages alike. Much of the population is not well versed with the legal system and they are often taken for a ride by those in power. Maamla Legal Hai shows how the quirkiest of cases are met with verdicts in these small town courts of India.

Have you seen Maamla Legal Hai yet? What are your thoughts on the show? Do you want to see season 2 of Maamla Legal Hai? Let us know in the comments below!

JAL gives Maamla Legal Hai a sharp 8.5 stars out of 10.

Ricky Stanicky Movie Review (2024): How far can you take a lie?

How many times have we made up lies or pushed our best friend under the bus to save ourselves from a tricky situation? It is almost like a golden rule of friendship that the friends have to have each other’s back no matter what. There are quite a lot of movies which show that essence of friendship. Some of Zac Efron’s movies have the friendship angle too. The latest one to join the ranks is Ricky Stanicky.

Ricky Stanicky is a comedy film about three men who lie about having a friend named Ricky Stanicky. As time goes by, they use Ricky Stanicky as their card to get out of anything they want. It began when they were children and accidentally set fire to Halloween decorations at a neighbour’s house. They wrote a made-up name on the jacket and thus emerged Ricky Stanicky.

Since that night, JT, Dean and Wes have used their “friend” Ricky Stanicky’s name to get out of any situation they don’t want to be in. In doing so, they have attended sports and music events, even gone on vacations. One time they took it too far, was on the day of TJ’s wife’s baby shower. To prove that Ricky Stanicky exists, they hire a lowly actor named Rod to play Stanicky. Their lie goes too far when the others around the trio are impressed and so is their boss. Soon, everyone finds out the truth.

    Ricky Stanicky Trailer

Ricky Stanicky is a comedy movie, no doubt about it. But there is a certain crass touch to it. Especially with Rod’s character and his gig as a pathetic singer who sings NSFW songs late at night in clubs. Then comes the utter lack of respect shown by TJ, Dean and Wes by skipping TJ’s own baby’s baby shower and leaving their wives to fend for themselves.

Now, before there is a dialogue that everyone has secrets and everybody lies, what is to be noted here is that TJ gave importance to a weekend away over the birth of his own son. He missed his son’s birth as his wife went into an early labour. to cover up where they all actually went and to fend of other questions, TJ, Dean and Wes came up with more lies.

My problem with movies like Ricky Stanicky is that in an attempt to poke fun at marriage and romantic relationships. Such movies always show a one sided approach to relationships, making the people look pathetic and pitiful. In most cases, it is always the boyfriend or the husband who is tired of his girlfriend or his wife and only wants to escape from her presence. But when she is around, he pretends to be the best partner she could have.

While such scenarios were funny a while ago, now they only seem outdated and unnecessary. If you want to escape your partner so much, do everyone a favour and leave the relationship. One need pretend or fake emotions to such an extent where you lie every time and experience a life on your own on the side, your partner blissfully unaware.

The tropes presented in Ricky Stanicky have been tried and tested a lot over the years, especially in early 2000s and late 2010s comedies. While the attempt at humour is well placed, one can’t help but leave with a bad taste in their mouth that the movie could have been better. Bodily humour sits well in a scene when done with a finesse, but with this movie, it feels that it was taken too far.

John Cena’s acting serves as redeeming factor in this experience because with only his character do we truly see any development happen. For the other characters, it is just pushed under the rug and we are made to assume that all is well with them. The movie runs its predictable course in 114 minutes, with some scenes feeling like an unnecessary addition.

While the trio is in the wrong, they are eventually forgiven for their lies. Dean ends up marrying his girlfriend, Wes gets published, TJ and his wife focus on their family and Rod aka Ricky becomes a part of the gang as well. But as the movie ends, one can’t help but feel they could have chosen something else to watch instead.

Additionally, the performances of the rest of the cast, including Chae Jong Hyeop and Kim Kyo-jin, vividly breathes life into their respective characters.

Castaway Diva portrays the journey of Seo Mok-ha, an aspiring singer whose life takes a dramatic turn when she becomes marooned on a deserted island for 15 years. The series beautifully maps her reintegration into modern society, the challenges of rediscovering her identity and ambitions, forging new relationships and friendships along the way while staying true to herself and her convictions despite the cut-throat competition of modern society.

It adeptly navigates through various intricate themes including identity, time, familial bonds, and the pervasive anxieties of the modern world. At a pivotal juncture in her life, Mok-ha becomes isolated from civilization, thrust into a battle against her own will to give up and let go, against nature’s challenges, and profound solitude. However, her resilience against overwhelming odds guides her back to the heart of civilization.

Rather than portraying Mok-ha as a victim of fate and despair, the show beautifully depicts her years of adversity on the island as the catalyst for her optimism and unwavering convictions. Here, success isn’t measured by fame but by the fulfilment derived from taking small steps towards her dreams, refusing to surrender, and cherishing and safeguarding her relationships as her primary support system in the entertainment industry where “cutting ties” is the norm for chasing success.

The show significantly reimagines the concept of family and interpersonal relationships through the poignant narrative of the Kang family. This particular storyline boldly confronts themes of domestic violence and challenges the problematic concept of ownership associated with the family. The Kang family’s struggle against Jung Bong-wan, Jung Ki-ho, and Jung Chae-ho’s biological father exemplifies a determined resistance against the rigid patriarchal norms prevalent in society, where legitimacy, authority and the idea of “family” often stem solely from a man’s lineage.

In contrast, the Kang family stands out as an antithesis, emphasizing a connection rooted in mutual love, respect, and genuine concern among its members. This stands in opposition to the conventional patriarchal ideals that expect compliance from wives and children, perpetuating a cycle where transgressions are rewarded with bruises in the name of love and affection.

Finally, Castaway Diva recurrently emphasizes a prevailing theme centered on resolving existential dread, encapsulated in a profound quote: ‘If you wish for something with all your heart, one way or another, it will come true and it will happen in an unexpected way.’ This statement dismantles the persistent need to control the future, a drive that often fuels the existential anxieties prevalent in the modern world.

The societal pursuit of degrees, prestigious jobs, material possessions perpetuates an unending rat race for supposed fulfilment. This whirlwind of human desires often leads us onto a directionless path filled with self-doubt, anxiety, and self-imposed discontent. However, instead of persistently chasing these external markers of success, the show encourages a leap of faith and a focus on the present.

By doing so, it suggests that things might unfold in unexpectedly unique and wholesome ways if we relinquish the need for absolute control over life.  While cynics may label such an idea as overly idealistic, it’s often the seemingly insignificant things that transform and save lives. It’s the little things in life that keep the flame of hope alight, aren’t they?

    Daily Dose of Sunshine Review

Daily Dose of Sunshine offers a blend of flavors. While it might be mistaken as a medical romantic comedy, the series transcends these boundaries to shed a light on the critical issue of mental health. It fearlessly endeavors to normalize discussions and educate viewers about the importance of mental well-being, aiming to dismantle taboos and misconceptions surrounding various mental disorders.

In recent years, the landscape of medical K-dramas has undergone a noticeable shift. Shows like Daily Dose of Sunshine, dedicated to advocating mental health awareness, have emerged amidst the once dominant focus on physical ailments. These narratives don’t shy away from shedding light on conditions like autism, schizophrenia, personality disorders, and addressing the often overlooked yet prevalent issues encompassing OCD, bipolar disorders, depression, and anxiety. Such storytelling reflects a growing urgency globally regarding mental health and the need for a holistic well-being.

At the heart of the show is Jung Da-eun, a nurse who becomes the focal point of the narrative. Initially transferred to the Department of Psychiatry due to her inherent kindness causing some friction in her previous role, Da-eun navigates the challenges of her new environment. As she grows accustomed to her role in the psychiatric ward, she extends unwavering support and friendship to patients, driven by a profound sense of duty and compassion.

However, the narrative takes a turn when Da-eun experiences a traumatic event, spiraling into depression. The series authentically portrays her descent into illness, showcasing her struggles with basic tasks, denial, self-harm, and eventual acknowledgement and recovery.Through Da-eun’s journey, Daily Dose of Sunshine vividly depicts the struggles faced by individuals dealing with mental health issues. It emphasizes the comprehensive impact on their physical, mental, and social well-being, emphasizing the importance of mental health care alongside physical ailments. The show confronts societal stigma, exemplified when Da-eun contemplates resigning from her job due to the stigma associated with her depression history.

In poignant moments, the head nurse serves as the show’s voice, articulating, ‘So what if you have a mental illness? What if you have depression? It’s not like anyone chooses to be ill.’ and explaining, “That’s what a mental illness is. It’s unpredictable disorder that can strike anyone, anywhere, at any time”. These powerful dialogues underscore the unpredictable nature of mental illness and the need to break societal stereotypes, fostering greater understanding and empathy toward those bravely battling mental health challenges. The show also suggests how critical the support of friends and family are for an individual’s fight against mental illness illustrated in the immense support that Da-eun’s mother, friends and colleagues showcase in the show.

    JAL Rating

Thus, Daily Dose of Sunshine, a metaphor for the daily doses of happiness, kindness and empathy that often go unnoticed, and also a reference to depression, becomes an admirable and courageous Kdrama that aims to brings forth the challenges and stigmas surrounding mental illnesses. Brave Citizen Review – Entering the Arena of Injustice : The Cat Vigilante Strikes!

Brave Citizen Review – Feline warriors have emerged to claim dominion over the world! That’s right, hear them roar… or rather, “meow”. In the latest cinematic venture starring Shin Hye-sun, titled ‘Brave Citizen,’ an unlikely “hero” emerges in the form of a masked cat vigilante, coming to the aid of students tormented by a ruthless bully. Join us as we descent into the ring of fire and fists in our Brave Citizen review!

    Brave Citizen Trailer

    Brave Citizen Review

    Brave Citizen Review

In the dynamic landscape of Korean dramas and films, Shin Hye-sun has emerged as a prominent figure, captivating audiences with her exceptional acting prowess and daring role choices. From the turning point of her acting career, the hysterical portrayal of a modern man trapped in a woman’s body in Joseon era Korea in “Mr. Queen”, to her latest appearance in the adrenaline-pumping action film “Brave Citizen” alongside the rising star, former U-Kiss member, Lee Jun Young.

This collaboration of two emerging stars is a recipe destined for success. ‘Brave Citizen’ unfolds as an engaging narrative featuring a former star boxer-turned-contract high school teacher, thrust into a confrontation with the school’s most formidable bully—a tale that pulsates with exhilaration and intensity. Shin Hye-sun portrays So Si-min, a cheerful, bubbly, and charismatic teacher at a private high school, aspiring for a permanent position within the institution. However, survival as a contract teacher in this environment requires turning a blind eye to the apparent bullying orchestrated by the school’s notorious thug, Han Soo-Gang.

Brave Citizen portrays how bullies and patriarchal forces prey on those least able to defend themselves. The reaction of the school and its students regarding the violent, brutal bullying of Go Jin Hyung, mirrors a society clouded by self-interest. This is illustrate, particularly, in scenes where school authorities and teachers accept expensive gifts from Han Soo-Gang’s step-mother in a bid to silence their objections. Ironically, this particular school boasts a bullying-free environment and has been acknowledged for the same.

Thus, the film exposes the entrenched status quo, highlighting the nexus between criminals, the state, and capitalist powers. Han Soo-Gang’s immunity from repercussions for his violence stems from his influential family. Si-min’s attempt to address school bullying falls on deaf ears, ultimately leading to Han Soo-Gang’s intimidation of his teacher and the unexpected appearance of the masked Vigilante in the school.

Furthermore, ‘Brave Citizen’ disrupts the stereotypical portrayal of a male hero in cinema. So-min strategically employs society’s patriarchal assumptions regarding male heroism, not only safeguarding her identity but also effectively challenging Soo-gang’s deeply ingrained male ego. She embodies the voice of all victims, rallying the school community to courageously confront injustice. This underscores how a single courageous voice possesses the potential to dismantle an oppressive system.

The film and well as So Si-min, undeniably, shines brightest in the action sequences. Reports indicate that Shin Hye-sun dedicated six months of training for her role as the skilled boxer, Si-min. This dedication culminates in the gripping final boxing match showcased in ‘Brave Citizen,’ where Si-min astounds viewers with her breathtaking aerial kicks and calculated punches in the showdown against Soo-Gang. The scene is charged with emotion, compelling viewers to fervently root for the triumph of good over evil. Lee Jun-Young’s portrayal of the ruthless bully is equally noteworthy.

However, catering to action enthusiasts, the film tends to exaggerate certain events. A prime example is the highly anticipated showdown between the masked vigilante and Han Soo-Gang, heavily promoted as a much anticipated school event.

In essence, the film promises a thrilling viewing experience for action enthusiasts. Its capacity to evoke strong emotions in the viewers towards diverse forms of injustice and its aim to raise awareness about bullying as a silent but destructive force, renders it a truly memorable watch.

High Cookie Review – Dive into the Deep, Dark World of Drugged Cookies which Fulfils All Desires

High Cookie Review – In today’s fast-paced digital world, where every scroll and click holds immense value, concerns about mental abilities are on the rise. High Cookie, the latest kdrama thriller, presents a tantalizing scenario: imagine being a student in a high-status school where success is everything. But as your grades slide, desperation sets in. Suddenly, there’s talk of a mysterious cookie that promises to unlock your potential and turn your dreams into reality. Would you risk it all for that edge? This show takes you on a gripping journey through a world of secrets, deception, and high-stakes decisions.

    High Cookie Trailer

    High Cookie Review

High Cookie Review – High Cookie Kdrama Review

High Cookie! is a compelling kdrama thriller delving into the lives of two sisters, Choi Soo-Young and Choi Min-Young, haunted by a history of brutal abuse at the hands of their father. The story unfolds years later, where Min-Young attends an esteemed private school, Jeonghan High School, while Soo-Young sacrifices her education to support her sister by working in a factory.

One standout quality of the show is its refusal to pigeonhole characters into clear-cut categories. Instead, it thrives on ambiguity, crafting characters closer to real-life personas. The introduction of a drug-induced cookie that compels individuals to confront their deepest desires adds a fascinating layer to the narrative. Soo-Young, initially depicted as a selfless, hardworking sister, harbors secret yearnings for a normal life free from her sister’s burdens. Similarly, Ho-su starts as a passive, kind character only to surprise audiences by emerging as a pivotal figure, the chef, in a gripping plot twist.

This multifaceted portrayal of characters also unveils the darker shades of human desires and corruption, exemplified by Yoo Sung-Pil, the counselor at Jeonghan High School. In reality, Yoo Sung-Pil is revealed to be one of the individuals attempting to uncover the identity of the chef in order to obtain the recipe for the high cookie drug. To do so, he had usurped the position of the school counsellor by brutally murdering his acquaintance.

While the series boasts intense moments, its pacing falters in the initial episodes, occasionally deviating from the expected tempo of thrillers. Several episodes preceding the chef’s revelation feel more like filler content, with the real action kicking in only after Ho-su’s true identity is unveiled. Despite Choi Hyun-wook’s remarkable portrayal, skillfully transitioning between the benevolent Ho-su and the enigmatic chef, the show’s writing appears unnecessarily prolonged.

Also Read The Worst of Evil Review: Step Into The World Of The Noir In This Action-Thriller Kdrama With Ji Chang-wook and Wi Ha-Jun

The excessive inclusion of predictable plot twists tends to weaken the impact of the storyline, resulting in a somewhat foreseeable overall script. For instance, in the latest episode, Soo-young’s attempt to deceive Ho-su takes an unexpected turn when she unexpectedly aligns with Ho-su, only for him to be abducted by the criminal masterminds responsible for creating the drug. Furthermore, a significant mystery arises surrounding Min-Young’s inexplicable coma. Logically speaking, it seems improbable for her to fall into a coma, let alone miraculously awaken from it, especially considering the fatal dose of the cookie that previously claimed the lives of two students.

Furthermore, a notable drawback of High Cookie is the lack of officially released subtitles, considerably hindering viewers’ engagement and resulting in a below-average viewing experience. Nevertheless, despite this setback, High Cookie still holds enormous potential as it approaches the release of its final four crucial episodes on November 23, 2023, marking the culmination of the series. The hope lingers that these concluding episodes will adeptly tie up the loose ends and necessary explanations, offering viewers a satisfactory and coherent thriller. Catch High Cookie! at Myasiantv.com.

    JAL Rating

Despite having its charms and twists, High Cookie feels repetitive at times with its plot progression. Thus, we give it a 7 out of 10.

Twinkling Watermelon Review – Is Twinkling Watermelon worth watching?

Twinkling Watermelon presents itself as a refreshing K-drama, echoing its vibrant title in the most delightful way. At the heart of this show lies a resounding theme: ‘Viva La Vida’ or ‘Long Live Life.’ Inspired by the renowned Mexican artist Frida Kahlo’s last painting before her passing, also titled ‘Viva La Vida,’ the series pays homage to a celebration of life amid adversities. References to Kahlo and her iconic painting are intricately woven throughout the storyline – from Yoon Cheong-ah’s admiration for Kahlo as her favorite artist to the band’s name ‘Watermelon Sugar’ and its logo, a watermelon painting inspired by Kahlo. In essence, the show serves as a tribute to Kahlo and the essence of life itself.

Moreover, ‘Twinkling Watermelon’ pays homage to various forms of art. Cheong-ah, an aspiring artist, finds solace and healing in her creative expressions, showcasing how art serves as a powerful tool to mend deep wounds and connect people in their life journey. Her sketches in the dark room symbolize her resilience and determination to survive through her artistry.

Eun-Gyeol discovers freedom in music after experiencing bullying, while Yi-Chan finds purpose and youthful enthusiasm in forming a band. Throughout the series, music and art intertwine, uniting the characters like a family, granting them meaning, solace, and aiding in their individual healing processes.

The sensitivity of ‘Twinkling Watermelon’ lies not only in portraying the challenges faced by individuals dealing with extraordinary circumstances but also in raising awareness about these issues. Cheong-ah’s inability to hear and her forced isolation paints a stark picture of how society treats extraordinary needs of people. Her step-mother’s denial of her right to express herself through sign language along with repeated abuse, exacerbates her isolation and trauma, magnifying the struggle for personal identity and freedom.

The show intricately weaves together the contrasting notions of sound and silence. Just like a CODA is a beautiful ending of a musical piece, tying all it’s aspects together, Eun-Gyeol, as a CODA, stands as a beautiful bridge between his family’s world of silence and the realm of sound and music. He becomes a CODA for both his parents, transforming their lives and suggesting a beautiful conclusion.

In essence, ‘Twinkling Watermelon’ encapsulates a heart-warming narrative—a must-watch for enthusiasts of feel-good stories centered around love, life, family, and friendships. It will definitely brighten your days of darkness and fill them with a warm tinge of hope and joy. Catch Twinkling Watermelon on Viki. Viva La Vida, Long Live Life!

Your mother wakes you one by one. She gives you a good oil massage. You have a relaxing bath and she gives you your new dress and you get ready. You come straight from your bath and you’re really very happy to wear your new dress after waiting for days and the moment has finally arrived.

You and your siblings are running around having fun while your mom and dad are getting ready. As you are chilling with your dad and siblings, your mom assembles the pooja things. You get the smell of the yummy, tasty food she prepares. As she’s arranging the food in the pooja room you are asking her a teeny tiny part from the food and the sweets and she says you can have it only after offering it to the god. You whine a little and come back.

Dot and Key Vitamin C Sunscreen Review Dot & Key Vitamin C + E SPF 50 Sunscreen Review – My Experience

I was super late to try this cult favourite sunscreen that everyone was talking about and that is my only regret about this.

Let’s start from the packaging. It comes in a vibrant yellow packaging, perfectly matching to the aesthetics of vitamin C, with some cute doodles. They are very transparent in mentioning the ingredients and details which is a really appreciable character for a brand that wants to deliver transparency to its customer. It comes in a tube like packaging with a small nozzle, that automatically dispenses the product, you don’t have need to squeeze it which is again a pro. It is travel friendly as well and fits everywhere.

    Texture of Sunscreen

The sunscreen is white, not tinted, leaves no white cast. It is suitable for all skin types. This sunscreen has triple Vitamin C concentrate, that helps in skin brightening, reduces tanning, dark spots and pigmentation. It also adds glow to your face, making it look dewy and also sets as a matte coverage when you top it off with powder. The consistency of this sunscreen is highly commendable. Its runny, lightweight, extremely comfortable to use and sits well on the skin. It takes less than 10 seconds to blend the sunscreen, perfect for people who are super lazy when it comes to getting ready (Just like me, yeah).

This sunscreen does not pile up. Most people experience piling when they add too much of a product and not able to blend it or when they apply it right after the moisturizer not giving time for the moisturizer to settle in. If you avoid these situation, most sunscreens won’t pile up. With SPF 50 and PA +++ rating, this offers high sun protection blocking up to 98 percentage of UV Rays. It did not cause any irritation to my skin or eyes unlike some sunscreens I used before. Its affordable and can be grabbed for combo deals with great offers during sale! This sunscreen will always be my go to, no matter how many new ones I try! Etched forever in my heart and skincare routine.
