Man Suang tells the story of Khem (played by Apo), a skilled dancer. He and his friend Wan get caught in murder scandal. They are offered a job at Man Suang. After seeing Khem’s skills, he is appointed as the main male dancer. At the academy, he meets Chatra (played by Mile) a drummer. As the two get to know each other, their friendship grows. Chatra is the son of Thai-Chinese parents. The reputation of such mixed race children is not so well in the then society for the Chinese and other foreigners were notorious in usurping opportunities from local Thai folks.
Khem and Wan are tasked to finding the real killer, but as they delve deeper into the mystery, they find a bigger game at play. They team up with Hong, the master of Man Suang house to find the main culprits. Khem, Chatra and Master Hong team up and execute a stellar plan to right the wrongs.
In Man Suang, we get to see Thailand just after the colonisation was eradicated from the country. The vibrant color palette in each screen brings the actions to life on screen. Each member of the star cast delivered a brilliant performance. Apo looked ever so graceful in his dance performances. Mile’s mysterious yet approachable persona as a percussionist was a delight to see on screen.
Man Suang gives a snapshot of issues that were prevalent in the Thai society back then. Dancers and artists were not treated with respect by the society. While they were in demand for their art, they were abused and tortured by the society. The movie artfully highlights issues the artisans of that era faced.
Man Suang is a movie to watch if you are looking for a delightful mix of mystery, history and thrill. The movie is currently available on Netflix globally. JAL gives Man Suang a shining 4 out of 5 stars. Have you watched the movie yet? Tell us what you think, in the comments below!
