EV Series: TATA Motor’s EV Models

In my previous automobile post we talked about the Electric Vehicles and their necessity, future and challenges we are facing in our current Indian market. ( If you haven’t read it kindly click here to know more about EV and it’s revolution ). In this post we are going to checkout TATA Motor’s EV Models.

TATA Motors – Our home-ground carmaker is all set with their fleet of EVs under all segments. Last year they came into EV market with their first car TATA Tigor EV and Tiago EV with a claimed range of 142 kilometers per charge and it was limited for sales to Government and commercial fleet buyers. This year they introduced a more-practical version of its Tigor EV that goes up to 213 kilometers on a single charge. Also they’ve added two more EV models to their fleet which will give them a good start in 2020. Here’s the TATA’s EV line-up in detail:

  • TATA Tigor EV – The First EV product from TATA Motors.

As I mentioned earlier TATA Tigor was introduced by the company back last year only for commercial fleet buyers. This vehicle is based on the same platform as TATA Tiago but with a boot. Both the vehicles are powered by a 16.2 kWh battery which gives 72 volt, three-phase AC induction motor that produces 40 bhp at 4500 rpm and 105 Nm of peak torque available at 2500 rpm. This year it is available in market for private buyers as well from 12.60 lakhs.

TATA’s Nexon has already got a good name for safety ( 5-star rating in Global NCAP crash tests) and value-for-money offering in the current market. Last week they’ve launched an EV version of Nexon with Zero emissions which is powered by a new cutting-edge Ziptron technology. Nexon EV is the first car to be powered with this technology.

Ziptron is the brand name for TATA Motor’s newly developed EV powertrain technology that will be used to build its future electric vehicles. It has been designed specifically for Indian climate and driving conditions. The company claims to have tested the technology across 1 million km with efficient high voltage system, zippy performance, long range, fast charging capability, battery with warranty of 8 years, and adherence to IP67 standard.

Apart from this, Nexon EV will be equipped with a 30.2kWh lithium-ion battery – ( Tata says they’ve tested for over 1 million kilometres ) which powers an electric motor that is good to give 95kW (129hp) and 245Nm of torque. It has standard fast-charging capability, and using a DC fast charger which can take the battery from 0-80percent charge in just one hour.

According to Tata Motors, Nexon does the 0-60kph and 0-100kph sprints in 4.6sec and 9.9sec respectively, making it one of the fastest Tata cars. Also it has been certified for a 312km range in a full charge by ARAI ( Automotive Research Association of India ).

  • TATA Altroz EV – First Premium Hatchback EV

The Altroz EV will be TATA’s third electric vehicle for India, after the Tigor EV and the Nexon EV. It is the Electric version of TATA’s first premium hatchback TATA Altroz. I’ve already discussed about it in one of my previous post. ( If you haven’t read it kindly click here to know more about TATA Altroz ).

Altroz EV version is based on the 45x electric concept car which made it’s debut in production form at Geneva Motor Show – 2019. It is likely to feature a battery pack with close to 30kWh capacity that will offer a range of about 300km on a single charge.

It is expected to offer LED headlamps, premium upholstery, and a bigger infotainment system than the regular Altroz and is likely to be launched by mid-2020 with a price range of under 15 lakhs.
